March 20, 2024 Communications

Students following Advanced Diploma in Masonry Heritage Skills at Level 4 the Higher Diploma in Masonry Heritage Skills at Level 5 within MCAST’s Institute of Engineering and Tansport (IET), carried out practical work in the community. This work included restoration of chapels, statues, niches, monuments and other masonry artefacts.

The College has been collaborating with Birkirkara Local Council for the past 8 years in order to carry out such projects. This collaboration not only provides a means by which MCAST can give back to the community but also serves as an important tool, which allows MCAST students to gain hands-on training experience, paving the way for them to become seasoned industry professionals later on in their careers.

Restoration projects carried out greatly aided the students’ understanding of the various processes utilized in restoring such masonry artefacts including the process involved in their cleaning, various restoration processes and techniques used depending on the nature of their degradation and the replacement of certain parts that are required to bring the artefacts back to their original state.

MCAST students were mentored by lecturers Mr Alex Caruana and Mr Mario Schembri, who provided the necessary guidance and coordinated the restoration work involved.

MCAST remains committed to providing students with a chance to carry out apprenticeships and practice in real-life work scenarios throughout their educational journey through multiple collaborations with various entities.
