MCAST has launched the seventh edition of its Research and Innovation EXPO, marking a significant milestone in the College’s ongoing mission to strengthen applied research across Malta. This year’s edition sees a showcase of various projects focusing on a number of different areas and disciplines. The EXPO is being held over two days on 13 and 14 November.
The opening of the Research and Innovation EXPO 2025 was addressed by Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti, who praised MCAST’s expanding role in shaping Malta’s applied research ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, he announced a increase in the support given through the Research Fellowship Scheme. Hon. Azzopardi Tanti emphasised the importance of the programme within the national innovation strategy:
“Seven editions on, this EXPO has become a flagship platform for applied research in Malta. By increasing the allocation of the Research Fellowship Fund to support all nine proposals, we are reinforcing our commitment to research that delivers practical, real-world solutions. This is research that transforms ideas into impact, for our communities, our economy, and our future.”

The MCAST Research Fellowship Scheme, introduced in 2024, continues to elevate the College’s capacity to link vocational education with industry-led research. This year’s funded projects span areas such as environmental science, technology, education, culture, and digital innovation.
MCAST Principal Mr Stephen Vella highlighted how the seventh edition reflects the maturation of MCAST’s research culture:
“At MCAST, both in our courses and in our research, our goal is to create an environment where learning and innovation are inseparable, where ideas move freely between classrooms, workshops, and workplaces. Through the work of our Applied Research and Innovation Centre, and the dedication of our researchers, we continue to build an ecosystem that connects education with industry, national priorities with European ambitions, and research with real-world impact.”

The EXPO is organised by the MCAST’s Applied Research and Innovation Centre led by Deputy Principal Dr Tatjana Chircop, Director Dr Lorna Bonnici West and Deputy Director Judita Tomaskinova.
