The MCAST Institute of Applied Sciences continues to strengthen its commitment towards vocational and experiential learning through the organisation of a one-day educational field trip to the Iblean Mountains in the Province of Ragusa, Sicily. The activity, which was specifically tailored for students reading the Bachelor in Environmental Science and Sustainable Technologies and the Advanced Diploma in Environmental Sustainability, took place towards the end of April.

The initiative reflects the Institute’s strong emphasis on applied learning, where students are encouraged to move beyond the traditional classroom environment and engage directly with natural ecosystems and environmental landscapes. Through a 15km guided hike between Monterosso Almo and Giarratana, students had the opportunity to experience first-hand the environmental features, ecological dynamics, and conservation value of the Iblean region.
Led by Dr Eman Calleja together with Mr Juan Jose’ Bonello, the activity was designed to expose students to practical aspects of environmental observation, sustainable land use, biodiversity appreciation, and field-based environmental interpretation.

At the MCAST Institute of Applied Sciences, vocational education remains at the core of the environmental programmes delivered by the Institute. Activities such as this allow students to develop practical competencies, critical observation skills, teamwork, and environmental awareness within real-world contexts. By experiencing ecosystems directly in the field, students gain a deeper appreciation of the challenges and responsibilities associated with environmental management and sustainability.

The field trip, which was funded by MCAST’s Erasmus+ Projects and Mobility Office, also highlights the Institute’s continued investment in providing students with enriching educational opportunities that combine academic knowledge with experiential learning. Such initiatives complement classroom-based teaching and laboratory work, helping students build the professional and practical skills required within the environmental sector.
Through initiatives like these, the MCAST Institute of Applied Sciences continues to demonstrate how vocational education can extend beyond the classroom and laboratory, transforming the natural environment itself into a dynamic and engaging learning space.
