In a step towards advancing sustainable aquatic practices and education in Malta, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) and Aquatic Resources Malta (ARM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening collaboration in areas of aquaculture, marine biology and fisheries.
The agreement, signed by MCAST Principal and CEO Mr Stephen Vella and ARM CEO Dr Francis Fabri, outlines a partnership focused on joint educational programmes, research initiatives and student training opportunities.
Operating under the Ministry for Education and the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights respectively, both institutions have committed to fostering knowledge exchange across academic, governmental and industry sectors.
Mr Vella described the agreement as “a meaningful step forward in preparing our students to become active contributors to Malta’s sustainable blue economy.” Dr Fabri echoed this sentiment, adding that “the collaboration will allow us to strengthen national capabilities in managing and protecting aquatic resources.”
The MoU includes provisions for the development of new educational and training modules aligned with sector needs, the organisation of workshops and seminars, and student access to ARM’s field-based data and facilities. It also provides for practical internships and joint research initiatives involving students, lecturers and researchers.
Through the Institute of Applied Science MCAST offers specialised vocational education in this area including a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Acquaculture.
This latest partnership marks a commitment by both institutions to support Malta’s evolving marine and aquatic sectors through evidence-based education and collaborative innovation.
