MCAST Students from the Institute of Engineering and Transport (IET) successfully participated in the international robotics competitions organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE R8 Robot Championship aims to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among IEEE members and focuses on STEM communication, entrepreneurship, creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Held in Malta on November 23rd and 24th, this event brought together aspiring engineers from across international higher education institutions, all eager to demonstrate their skills in robotics.
The IEEE R8 Robot Championship aims to foster interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among students. This year’s competition featured teams from various higher education institutions, including 15 competitors from the University of Malta and other universities representing ten countries such as Ireland, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.
Lecturer Isaac Massa mentored MCAST’s team, represented by Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Control Engineering students Luke Camilleri, Ben Farrugia, and Chris Saliba. The students dedicated months to designing, building, programming, and implementing their robot, aptly named “The Punisher.” Their preparation involved meticulous work on control systems for easy maneuverability and welding and laser cutting techniques.
The hard work paid off, as the MCAST team earned two awards for Best Looking Robot and Most Effective Add-on, highlighting their creativity and technical prowess. This is the second time MCAST is participating and supporting this event, following the College’s participation in 2022 when the team placed first in the overall competition and one awards for the best design, best-looking robot and branding (Judges’ Choice), best pushing power and best effective add-on.
Stephen Sammut, Director of Student Success at MCAST, echoed these sentiments: “Participating in events like the IEEE R8 Robot Championship enhances our students’ practical skills and prepares them for real-world challenges. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing how they will continue to innovate in the future.”
Carolina Sofia, Deputy Director of Electrical Engineering, said, “The team’s dedication and innovative spirit truly shone through at this championship. It reflects our commitment to nurturing talent in engineering and technology.”
The MCAST team was sponsored by MG2i, Black Gold Engineering, Delta Steel, MedServ, Eand L Enterprise, and Magigo.
IEEE is renowned as a trusted voice for engineering and technology globally. The championship serves as a platform for students from pre-university to university levels to engage with cutting-edge technology and develop essential skills such as teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
