Course Description

Dental Surgery Assistants are Allied Health personnel who play an important role in the performance of dental procedures. The aim of this course is to provide both the theoretical and the clinical practical techniques necessary for future dental personnel to be considered competent to assist the dental team. The objectives of this course are to instruct the candidate in basic knowledge of: (i) teeth anatomy, pathology, oral care and instruments, (ii) the health and safety of dental surgeries, (iii) patient care prior, during and post dental treatments, (iv) maintaining good communication with patients and (v) maintaining records and appointments and placing orders for materials in use in the dental surgery.

Entry Requirements

Internal Progression Route….

  • MCAST Diploma in Applied Science, or
  • MCAST Diploma in Health and Social Care, or
  • MCAST Diploma in Social Care, or
  • Any MCAST MQF Level 3 Diploma, whilst being in possession of the compulsory subjects as indicated hereunder

OR

4 subjects at SEC / SSC&P / SSQP, or equivalent, with a Pass Grade / Level 3 Compulsory: English Language AND Mathematics AND Biology / Health and Social Care

Other notes related to this programme

Applicants will be subject to an Occupational Health Screening to establish their suitability for the Placement which is a mandatory part of this programme. Once course would have started, failure to present a successful health screening (as per an established and set Protocol), will result in not being in a position to start the work placements. This will eventually preclude the student from a successful completion of course. Prior to embarking on Work Placement, student must also provide evidence of a clean police conduct certificate.

An Applicant aged 21 years and over, and not in possession of the above Entry Requirements, may wish to apply via the Maturity Clause route.  Applicants under Maturity Clause must still present clear documentation showing that they have a number of achievements in hand together with their School Leaving formal Certificate / document (to confirm their successful completion of compulsory schooling).  Age is not the only eligibility factor in such instances.  Besides documents showing their past achievements, applicants must present a detailed CV using the Europass format, as well as the most recent official JobsPlus Employment History.
