MCAST has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the IEEE Malta Association to expand student opportunities in engineering, ICT, and robotics competitions, and to strengthen links between academia and the global technology community.

The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) and the IEEE Malta Association have formalized a partnership to advance engineering and ICT education in Malta. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 30 June 2026 by MCAST Principal and CEO, Mr Stephen Vella, and IEEE Malta Association Chair, Dr Conrad Attard.

MCTThe MoU provides a framework for collaboration on activities such as the IEEE Malta Robot Championships, workshops, seminars, hackathons, and technical conferences. It also increases opportunities for MCAST students to participate in robotics and technology competitions both locally and internationally.

A key element of the agreement is MCAST’s commitment to supporting student participation in the IEEE Malta Robot Championships by providing resources, mentoring, and guidance. The partnership also seeks to promote IEEE membership among MCAST students and staff, further connecting them with international engineering and technology networks.

At the signing, Mr Vella described the agreement as an opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom. “This is not just an agreement on paper. This is a concrete opportunity for our students to participate in competitions, hackathons, robot championships, workshops, and activities that help them develop the skills that industry is looking for today,” he said. He also highlighted MCAST’s recent success at a global robotics competition, where a student team placed second, as evidence of the college’s growing ambition in the field.

MCTMr Vella reiterated MCAST’s commitment to learning beyond the classroom and expressed enthusiasm for the momentum in Malta’s engineering and technology sector. “We want to inspire more young people to choose these professions and give them the confidence to compete not only locally but also at an international level,” he said.

Under the MoU, both organizations will appoint liaisons to coordinate joint activities and collaborate with openness and mutual respect. The agreement also offers CPD opportunities for professionals, connections with regional and international IEEE structures, and support for research and innovation in engineering, computing, and emerging digital technologies.

The MoU will remain in effect for three years from the date of signature, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.
