The Malta College of Arts, Science, and Technology (MCAST), hosted an event on campus in Paola on 1 November 2024. The event was organised by the National Student Travel Foundation (NSTF)
The initiative consisted of a series of panel discussions featuring representatives from CERN and leading experts in the fields of science and technology. The event was part of a series of celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of collaborations between CERN and NSTS.
NSTF’s main goal is to assist in generating awareness and interest amongst students at all educational levels through non-formal educational programmes.
Speaking during the event MCAST Principal and CEO Mr Stephen Vella said, “As we look back on the remarkable legacy of CERN and NSTF, we are reminded of the transformative power of education and research. CERN’s unparalleled contributions to scientific discovery and NSTF’s dedication to advancing science education align closely with MCAST’s mission.” Mr Vella added, “MCAST has always placed great value on hands-on, practical learning. We believe deeply in the power of experiential education to not only teach concepts but also to spark curiosity, problem-solving, and resilience. Through this approach, we strive to prepare our students not just for academic success, but for real-world challenges in science and technology.”
.
MCAST Deputy Principal Mr Ronald Curmi moderated the discussions. Moreover, MCAST Director at the College’s Institute of Engineering and Transport (IET) Dr Ing Stephen Sammut participated in one of the panel discussions.
Various topics were discussed during the event, including STEM education, experiential learning, evolving technologies, and the impact of a research facility within an educational institution. The event provided MCAST students with the opportunity to engage with industry experts, dive into groundbreaking research, and explore the future of science at CERN.
Three representatives from CERN namely, Mr Christoph Schaefer, Mr Kai Schweda, and Mr Ernest Sylwester, and NSTF Secretary General Mr Francis Stivala attended the event at MCAST. Speaking during the event Mr Stivala said, “Through the relationship between NSTF and CERN, we were able to put together this series of panels representing a fusion of educational dedication and scientific curiosity, bringing together institutions that share a common mission: advancing knowledge and fostering innovation. The dialogue here today serves as an inspiration for young minds looking to make an impact in science and technology.”
During the event, the winners of the NSTF Malta Student Science Forum (MSSF), who visited the CERN facilities as part of their winning prize shared their experience with the audience.
