On 15th November 2024, MCAST, as a key partner of EIT Urban Mobility RIS Hub Malta, played a pivotal role in organizing the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) & Data Spaces for Urban Mobility Workshop at the MDIA (Malta Digital Innovation Authority)’s head offices in Birkirkara. This engaging and interactive event brought together industry experts, educators, and policymakers to explore cutting-edge solutions for the future of urban mobility in Malta.
The workshop, led by PAF (Project Aegele Foundation) as the managing organization of the RIS Hub, featured in-depth sessions by prominent European mobility experts from SWARCO and FACTUAL, focusing on the integration of ITS technologies and the transformative potential of data spaces in urban mobility planning and traffic management. Participants gained practical insights into how these technologies can reduce congestion, enhance public transport, and support sustainable transport solutions.
A Hands-On Approach: The VR Experience
A highlight of the event was the immersive SWARCO Meta City VR Experience, which allowed participants to interact with state-of-the-art ITS solutions in a simulated urban environment. Notably, the VR headsets used for this experience were provided by MCAST’s EdTech Hub, showcasing the institution’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and technology in education.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
The workshop underscored the importance of collaboration between stakeholders, including MDIA, DiHubMalta, and EIT Urban Mobility’s partners. Special thanks were extended to MDIA for their support in facilitating the event and to the speakers Ms. Itir Coskun, Mr. Rory Abraham (SWARCO), and Mr. Josep Laborda (FACTUAL) for sharing their expertise and insights. Their contributions enriched the discussions and provided participants with actionable knowledge for addressing Malta’s unique urban mobility challenges.
