MCAST’s Institute of Engineering and Transport (IET) is participating in the IEEE Region 8 Robot Championship for the first time. The event aims to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among members of IEEE . The initiative focuses on STEM communication, entrepreneurship, creativity, problem solving and teamwork. The championship will be held on 3 and 4 December at the Monte Kristo Estate in Siggiewi, and all are encouraged to visit the MCAST stand in support of the College’s roboteers.
Three Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electronics and Control Engineering are participating. These second-year students are Jean-Paul Bonavia , Gabriel Giordmaina and Zack Farrugia.
Part of the students’ preparation was to organise and prepare two STEM workshops for the public (Science in the City 2022 and World Children’s Day at Esplora). The students designed and built the Alpha Beetle robot based on the competition rules and game challenges.
Senior lecturer Dr Ing. Clive Seguna said, “The goal is to encourage students to explore and contribute to project-based international learning activities, to open up for more research opportunities and technologies for our educational institution. Furthermore, this event allowed our students to join the IEEE Malta Student Branch.”
MCAST’s participation is sponsored by MG2i, JACAP Limited, Invent 3D, IEEE Malta and Delta Steel, who supported the students with the materials and tools required to build the robot.
