Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility in Malta: How to move towards healthier travel habits?

September 15, 2021 Communications

The EIT Urban Mobility Hub Malta, which is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, and Transport Malta invite you to their online seminar with panel discussions on September 16th, from 15:30-18:00 (via Zoom and Facebook Live).

In line with this year’s theme for the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK 2021, the ‘Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility in Malta’ event is being organised to raise awareness on challenges around mobility and health locally, while providing practical take-aways and information to the audience.

This seminar will kickstart the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK campaign in Malta, which seeks to promote clean and sustainable urban mobility. The campaign is headed by the European Commission and is celebrated across all EU Member States, on the week starting 16th September and culminates on the 22nd of September, which is World Car Free Day. Activities and measures to be implemented as part of the 2021 campaign are intended to encourage and promote sustainable mobility through healthy lifestyle actions under this year’s slogan ‘Move Sustainably. Stay Healthy’.

The panel discussions of our event will reflect on the opportunities for change resulting from the unprecedented health crisis in Europe. How can we encourage walking, cycling, and other forms of physical activity in our urban areas? How can we reduce the impact of pollution and advocate for more greenery and open public spaces, promoting physical exercise, opportunity for social interaction and better mental health and well-being?

Addressing policy makers, government representatives, educators and school staff, architects and urban planners, and students and professionals in the health and transport sectors, and the general public, the event includes 3 panel discussions with experts and practitioners in the field, on the following topics:

  • How is transport impacting health in Malta?
  • As a place of work or education, what can you do to promote healthier travel habits?
  • What can cities do to promote active mobility to boost residents’ physical and mental health?

Confirmed speakers include Ms. Laura-Sue Mallia (Transport Malta), Ms. Doris Abela (Mayor, Żejtun Local Council), Mr. Robert Galea (Planning Authority), Mr. Stefan Buttigieg (MD, Public Health) and many more. The panel discussions will take place live in-person, with the audience joining online, as the event will be live-streamed via Facebook and Zoom, where people can interact with the discussion by putting forward their comments and questions.

This event is organised by the EIT Urban Mobility Hub Malta in collaboration with Transport Malta. The Hub in Malta is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. It has been set up as part of the EIT Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS), the EIT Community’s outreach scheme, introduced in 2014 to make information and expertise from its unique approach available to others. It allows EIT Urban Mobility to share good practice and experiences and to widen participation across Europe. Hub Malta is led by Project Aegle Foundation (PAF, a non-profit promoting sustainable mobility), the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) and the Valletta Design Cluster (part of the Valletta Cultural Agency) with the local mobility ecosystem in Malta, with the aim to nurture sustainable visions for better local urban mobility on the islands (VDC).
